Every year, 26 million lunchboxes end up straight in the trash in Danish homes. In a time marked by war, crises, and uncertainty, such numbers can easily get lost among other worries. But precisely when the world feels overwhelming, it is important to act where we can actually make a difference. Food waste is far more extensive than uneaten lunchboxes, but this figure clearly shows the scale of the problem—and why it is urgent to take responsibility.

Club 12.3 at Madens Folkemøde

The Food People’s Meeting is a step in the right direction. Here, citizens, decision-makers, producers, researchers, chefs, and more gather annually for debates, conversations, and new taste experiences. The meeting takes place in Nykøbing Falster from May 15th – 17th. ESG365 and Stop Wasting Food are hosting an event on Friday, Club 12.3, inspired by Minister of Food Jacob Jensen. The minister is invited to the event along with Rasmus Prehn, Director of the Organic Association, and Selina Juul, Chair of Stop Wasting Food.

The fight against food waste is “need to have”

This year, the EU Council and European Parliament have adopted new targets to reduce food waste in the EU. In agriculture and food processing, food waste must be reduced by 10% by 2030. For households, retail, and restaurants, the target is 30% per capita by 2030.

Selina Juul, Chair of Stop Wasting Food, is positive about the initiative: “The fight against food waste is no longer a ‘nice to have’ but a ‘need to have’ – for the climate, as well as for the economy.” She adds: “The future is extremely uncertain right now, but let us not forget the power we have as individuals and as a collective. Together, we can choose hope over fear, collaboration over division – and resilience over polarization.”

Make the effort against food waste a measurable ESG point in your company

At ESG365, they encourage making the fight against food waste a concrete metric within companies. Founder and CEO, Per Ørum, says: “Although tracking efforts against food waste is not yet a standard metric within ESG, it makes a lot of sense to measure it as part of a company’s own sustainability efforts.” He explains: “Companies can get a report from their waste provider on how much food waste they generate. The company can use that data as an indicator of food waste.”
