Environment (E)

“E” stands for environment, and it represents the environmental criteria that companies and investors consider to assess an organization’s impact on the environment.

The most important environmental criteria (E) for small and medium-sized enterprises are based on the VSME standard. Here, you must report on the following areas:

1. Climate Change:

  • Greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1, 2, and 3)
  • Strategies for reducing emissions and adapting to climate change
  • Use of renewable energy and energy efficiency

2. Resource Management:

  • Water consumption and management
  • Waste management and recycling rates
  • Use of raw materials and materials, including sourcing from sustainable suppliers

3. Biodiversity and Ecosystems:

  • Measures to protect biodiversity
  • Impact of business activities on natural habitats
  • Conservation and restoration of ecosystems

4. Environmental Pollution:

  • Emissions of pollutants into air, water, and soil
  • Strategies to prevent and reduce environmental pollution

It is a good idea to start with Scope 1 and Scope 2, which are the company’s direct CO₂ emissions.

Scope 3 is more complicated and takes longer. It is considered good practice to state in the report how far you are with Scope 3 and when you expect to be ready to publish data on the indirect CO₂ emissions.

To calculate your environmental data, you can use the Climate Compass – a digital tool developed by the Danish Business Authority and the Danish Energy Agency.

You can subsequently enter your E-key ratios in the Climate Compass into ESG365, so that they become part of your ESG reporting.

You can find the Climate Compass here

Social (S)

The “S” represents the social factors that define the relationship between your company and your employees, society, and other stakeholders.

The most important social criteria (S) for small and medium-sized enterprises are based on the VSME standard. Here you must report on the following areas:

1. Employee Rights and Conditions:

  • Compliance with labour standards and fair working conditions
  • Health and safety in the workplace
  • Measures to promote work-life balance

2. Equality and Diversity:

  • Promoting gender equality and diversity in the workforce
  • Inclusion and diversity programmes

3. Training and Education:

  • Investments in employee training and development
  • Professional development and continuous education programmes

4. Human Rights:

  • Compliance with human rights throughout the supply chain
  • Measures against child labour, forced labour, and other human rights violations

5. Community and Society:

  • Engagement and contributions to the local community
  • Social projects and sponsorships

FTE (Full-Time Equivalent): FTE measures working time in relation to a full-time employee in order to compare labor requirements.

An example of how it works:

  • 30 employees work full-time and each works 40 hours per week.
  • 10 employees work part-time and each works 20 hours per week.

To calculate the total number of FTEs for this workforce, we use the following calculation:

  • 40 full-time employees (40 FTE)
  • 10 part-time employees, each working half a day (10 employees x 0.5 FTE each = 5 FTE)

Total number of FTE = 40 FTE + 5 FTE = 45 FTE

Governance (G)

“G” stands for governance and covers the factors that concern how a company is managed and organized.

The most important management criteria (G) for small and medium-sized enterprises are based on the VSME standard. Here you must report on the following areas:

1. Ethics and Integrity:

  • Implementation and adherence to ethical guidelines
  • Measures to combat corruption and bribery

2. Risk Management:

  • Implementation of risk management systems
  • Monitoring and management of ESG risks

3. Corporate Structure and Transparency:

  • Transparency in corporate governance and decision-making processes
  • Disclosure of the executive remuneration structure

4. Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Kommunikation und Zusammenarbeit mit Stakeholdern
  • Berücksichtigung von Stakeholder-Interessen in Entscheidungsprozessen

5. Data Protection and Information Security:

  • Protection of personal data and cybersecurity measures
  • Compliance with data protection laws and regulations

Governance includes the composition of the company’s board of directors, including diversity and the independence of board members. It also involves ensuring that the board has sufficient expertise and experience to make informed decisions.

Corporate governance refers to the way a company is managed and controlled. This includes the relationship between shareholders, the board of directors, and management, as well as the overall structure and allocation of responsibilities within the company.

Support for the Climate Compass

What is the Climate Compass?

With the Climate Compass, you can calculate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with your company’s activities. The Climate Compass is designed to be used by many different types of companies, meaning it can be used to create detailed climate accounts if your company needs them. However, it is not necessary to use all parts of the tool if you don’t require them.

The main results from your work in the Climate Compass are entered into ESG365. You can access the guide for the Climate Compass here: Guide

There is both a guide and a FAQ available on the Climate Compass guidance page when logged in at Klimakompasset.dk.
